Papyrus, commonly known as paper plant or Cyperus papyrus (family Cyperaceae), was used as writing material in ancient times. In Egypt's Nile delta, the papyrus plant has a long history of cultivation. Its stalk or stem is harvested for its inner pith, which is divided into tiny strips, compressed together, and dried to create a smooth, thin writing surface. Papyrus is a grass-like aquatic plant that can reach heights of up to 4.6 m (15 feet), grows in still water up to 90 cm (3 feet) deep, and has woody, bluntly triangular stems.
