This smoke cleansing blend is inspired by the story of the 4 Thieves:

During the time of the bubonic plague, four spice traders decided to make money by looting the homes and bodies of the dead and dying. Even though they were in close contact with the deadly disease, none of them contracted it. They did this by making a vinegar wash and oil blend with special spices that they used every few hours. When the thieves were captured and brought before the king, he told them he would spare them the fate of burning at the stake if they told him what spices they used. Of course they agreed and told the king-the ingredients included herbs like rosemary, cloves & sage. Legend has it that the king did indeed spare them the fate of burning but hung them instead. It's speculated that this blend actually kept away the fleas that carried the disease.
