Tulsi, also known as Holy Basil, is an annual native to India and other tropical regions of Asia. It has since been cultivated and is grown extensively in Central and South America for its plentiful medicinal benefits. Tulsi is a close relative to sweet basil, a familiar culinary herb, though the two are not to be confused.

Often colloquially referred to as the "Queen of Herbs" due to its long history as an invaluable medicinal herb, Tulsi has a wide range of medicinal and spiritual benefits. Traditionally recognized as an energizing tonic herb, Holy Basil was frequently used to increase vitality and resistance to physical stress, especially in the heart and circulatory system. It is a predominantly cooling herb, making it useful in mitigating fevers and inflammation.

In Hindu spiritual traditions, Tulsi is associated with the goddess Lakshmi - a goddess of wealth, prosperity, fortune, love, beauty, and power - giving the plant all of these properties. Hang Tulsi above your door to invite wealth and prosperity into your home, or carry with you for the same purposes. The herb can also be burned to purify a space. To ensure a peaceful transition from life to death, place a leaf of holy basil in the mouth of the deceased. Burning an incense made from the plant is also said to guide messages to departed souls.
