Daughter of Perses and Asteria, Hecate was the goddess who helped Demeter search for Persephone when she was kidnapped by Hades. She is a lover of solitude and could be found walking the roads at night or visiting cemeteries during the dark phases of the moon, and was described as shining or luminous. 
She was named by Zeus as ruler of the sky, the sea and the earth. Hecate has extensive knowledge of herbs and poisons and has been described as strong, protective and a force to be reckoned with.
