Persephone, otherwise known as the 'Queen of the Underworld' is the Greek goddess of the dead, spring and maidenhood.
Daughter of Zeus and Demeter, she was kidnapped by Hades and taken to the Underworld to be his bride. When Demeter learned that Zeus has conspired on her daughter's abduction she was furious, and refused to let the earth fruit until Persephone was returned.
Unfortunately Persephone had already eaten the pomegranate seeds which tied herself to Hades—the pomegranate being a symbol of the indissolubility of marriage. It was eventually decided Persephone would spend 6 months of the year in the underworld (when we experience the colder seasons) and 6 months above (when the earth blooms).
Persephone is usually depicted as a young goddess holding sheafs of grain and a flaming torch. She is described as mystical, visionary and often possessing spirit guides.
We've created the perfect pomegranate shaped candle to honour our Queen of the Underworld. Wine red in colour and accented with gold, these pomegranate's have the appearance of being slightly melted on top.. as if they have visited the depths of the Underworld.
