Selkies are mythological creatures in Nordic and Celtic lore who can change form from a seal to human by shedding their skin. It is said that if a human steals a selkie’s skin, she must marry him but will always be longing for the sea. One day, when she uncovers her skin’s hiding place, she will abandon her life on land (children and all) and return to the sea.
